There is a hubris problem: excessive pride, dangerous overconfidence, and complacency.
It’s not only infected our political leaders, oligarchs, and intelligentsia; it’s infected the entire culture and all of us with it. Consciously or unconsciously, we all recycle the patent nonsense emanating from the mouths of our academics, oligarchs, media presenters, and politicians.
We are in a cult that drinks its own bath water and takes it for a sacrament.
A proud and thankless generation
There are endless reasons to be proud of what our ancestors achieved.
Yet instead of pride, we readily depict them as racist, misogynist, genocidal imperialist colonisers, homophobes, wife-beaters, bible-bashing puritan hypocrites, cruel and superstitious witch-burners, anti-Semite Nazis, and the list goes on. The wealth, values, and institutions we inherited, we condemn together with those who gifted them to us. We have toppled the Titans, dismissed their triumphs, ridiculed their struggles, and transformed their sins into monuments of shame
Just as King Lear said, “How sharper than a serpent’s tooth it is to have a thankless child!”
Like the many civilisations that came before us – Sumerian, Hittite, Babylon, Egypt, Greece, and Rome – we are on a path to destruction.
False gods
Let’s talk about the gods we worship and the towers of Babel we build.
Bill Gates.
On Monday, he creates vaccines that can cure everything. He clones min-nuclear reactors on Tuesday. Wednesdays, he’s busy saving the planet from climate change, seeding sulfates into the upper atmosphere to block out the sun’s deadly rays. Thursday finds him ending famine, synthesizing meat-like proteins from yeast. By Friday, he’s developing a super-intelligent android capable of wiping your ass. On Saturday, he writes a blog to inform one and all of his unlimited benevolence, leaving Sundays to count his billions.
George Soros.
Ever since he anonymously crushed the British pound into submission and earned his billions, George has understood he works best in the shadows. This god of currency speculation loves nothing better than to fund lost causes. He’s graduated from mere currency speculation to regional wars and color revolutions.
George is nothing if not an unapologetic champion, the patron saint of freedom of movement. How else is George to realise his ambitious dream of freedom without the destroyed cities that displace millions and turn them into the refugees that pour across borders all over the developed world? George hates tyrants, defining a tyrant as any political leader he can’t buy. He loves Black Lives Matter and LGBTIQA+ people and voraciously defends their rights. George is bullish about defunding the police, ardently supports Antifa, and is a champion of government-funded heroin injecting rooms to assist unhappy children to cope with their lot in life. He truly embodies the very soul of a Knight Errant, a champion of the oppressed.
These hyperbolic portrayals, though exaggerated, reflect our perception of these individuals as almost mythic figures whose thought and actions we have consecrated as our own.
A Pantheon of insane beliefs
Our modern demigods don’t stop there.
The western citizen is enthralled by an endless cacophony of alarms emanating from our pantheon of demigods. Like the gods of yore, they demand supplication and sacrifice. They are jealous and insist and rage against modern day heretics and false prophets: Terrorists, Russians, Muslim extremists, conspiracy theorists, Putin trolls, or touts of misinformation. Everywhere they see apostates, Judases, insurrections, and right-wingers threatening the rule of law, human rights, and our Democracy.
But our belief is insufficient. It will not satisfy. Like Abraham, we are called to make the ultimate sacrifice. Carbon, the substance that makes all life possible, the same element that we are made from, must be removed from the atmosphere.

The new apocalypse, much like the old
And there you have it!
Just as the Bible ends with Revelations and Armageddon, so our secular Darwinian, quantum big-bang narrative offers an analogous end. A fate no less misanthropic than that prophesied in the Book of Revelations. The singular distinction is that this version of the end comes at our own hand. The creator’s judgment be damned—we’ll suicide!
What’s more, we’ve developed and continue to develop a plethora of potent strategies to ensure that we and we alone are the architects of our own demise. There will be no belated attempt by the non-existent biblical God to usurp our free-will.
Thus, aside from an abundance of nuclear missiles, we’ve got laboratories with stockpiles of exotic lethal pathogens—superior to COVID. These pathogens could be released into the water supply, the atmosphere, or the food cycle-faster than you can post a tweet.
The more cerebral citizen – also the most dangerous – we’ve got covered with climate change and mental health medicines. They are particularly susceptible to the distortion of the truth and sowing information confusion. Prolonged states of cognitive uncertainty usher suicidal ideation and depression.
As a final insurance policy, we are convinced that the earth is over-populated. But, thank the gods, fertility rates across the globe—outside Africa—are already well below replacement levels and plummeting. This unnatural goal could only be realised by the flaming imaginary gender wars, undermining the centrality of marriage, family, and religion.
Not to mention the importance of normalising homosexuality and transgender, whilst stoking fear of venereal disease, providing cheap ready access to prophylactics, the pill, and free abortion on demand.
New gods gaslighting what’s left of us into eternity
We can anticipate a future where Bill, George, and others of their kind will live in a world with few people, freedom of movement and enjoy eternal life.
It’s a post-human era where technology, Artificial Intelligence, and biology meld. In a generation from now, following the current trends, we will deify the likes of Bill and George. Their consciousness will be absorbed by a Frankenstein super-intelligent android.
And they may go on gaslighting what remains of the rest of us for eternity. Or, we can reject their hubris and cut our own messy path forward.
